Abstract

Orthognathic surgery, particularly the “surgery first” approach, has become a pivotal intervention for improving the quality of life of patients with dento-maxillary anomalies. This prospective analytical study aimed to evaluate changes in oral health-related quality of life using the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) and Oral Health Impact Profile 49 (OHIP-49) of patients with dento-maxillary anomalies treated using the “surgery first” approach. Material and methods: Eighteen patients aged 18–35 years with Class II and III dento-maxillary anomalies treated at “Sf. Spiridon” Hospital in Iași were assessed preoperatively and three months postoperatively. The results demonstrated significant improvements across multiple domains. Results: The mean OQLQ score decreased from 82.5 to 28.27 (p=0.012p=0.012p=0.012), reflecting substantial enhancements in aesthetic impact, oral function, and psychosocial well-being. Similarly, OHIP-49 scores showed a significant reduction in functional limitation (p=0.021p=0.021p=0.021) and trends toward improvement in other domains. These findings align with previous studies, confirming the efficacy of the “surgery first” approach in reducing treatment duration and addressing patients’ aesthetic and functional concerns early in the process. Conclusions: This study highlights the rapid and statistically significant benefits of orthognathic surgery on patients’ quality of life. The insights gained underscore the importance of integrating patient-reported outcomes into treatment planning, offering valuable guidance for clinicians and healthcare planners.
