ABSTRACT

Aim of the study The present work aims to determine and provide a comprehensive understanding of coated tongue for dental and medical practitioners. Materials and methods We undertook a biomedical electronic search concerning coated tongue and reviewed 14 papers concerning the selected topic. Results The variables associated with coated tongue exhibit significant variation, ranging from oral mucosa determinants to various malignancies. Certain disorders exhibit changes in the tongue microbiota, which can be exploited as a diagnostic technique. Conclusions Due to its ease of collection, the microbiota of the tongue’s dorsal surface may be employed as a biological marker for important diseases such as gastric cancer.
