ABSTRACT

Dental caries is a widespread disease that affects almost half of the world’s population, regardless of age. Dental caries along with oxidative stress, glycation and metabolic disease are in an intricate relationship. Carious lesions can influence the antioxidant activity in the oral cavity. This cross sectional human cohort (n=193) study aimed at assessing the influence and contribution of dental caries, evaluated by DMFT (Decay-Missing-Filled-Teeth)-index, to the general pool of oxidative stress markers, and integrating these findings in the general health and anthropometric context of the patients. DMFT index was negatively correlated with salivary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and nitric oxide (NO). Treated caries were positively correlated with oxidative markers such as total oxidative status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI). In conclusion carious disease enhanced the oxidative processes and altered the general pool of oxidative stress markers.
